Historical Background:
Kotli has historically been an important settlement and trading centre in southern Azad Jammu & Kashmir, owing to its strategic location along traditional routes connecting the plains of Punjab with the hilly regions of Kashmir. For centuries, the area functioned as a link between mountain communities and lowland markets, supporting agriculture, livestock trade, and regional commerce.
Before the partition of the subcontinent in 1947, Kotli was administratively part of Mirpur District of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. The region experienced significant political and social change during the events surrounding Partition, after which Kotli became part of Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
In the decades following 1947, Kotli gradually developed its own administrative identity due to population growth, expanding settlements, and increasing governance needs. Recognizing its growing importance, Kotli was formally elevated to the status of a separate district, allowing for more localized administration, improved public services, and better representation in regional governance.
Since becoming a district headquarters, Kotli has continued to evolve as an educational, economic, and administrative hub for southern AJK. Its historical role as a trade corridor, combined with post-partition administrative development, has shaped Kotli into one of the most significant districts of Azad Kashmir today.
